While a general yoga class can be wonderful for strengthening and relaxing the body and calming the mind, they may be ineffective or possibly inadvisable for more serious health conditions. A series of private yoga therapy sessions can help people suffering from serious health problems by tailouring the yoga to suit the person’s needs. Yoga Therapy can be helpful for a whole range of conditions, including Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Anxiety, Depression, M.E., Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Fybromyalgia and fertility problems.

Yoga Therapy uses a combination of physical asanas (postures), breathing and relaxation techniques and meditation to help bring your body and mind back into balance. You will be able learn these tools yourself and take them away to practice yourself to improve your own health. Gillian has undertaken Yoga Therapy for 21st Century Conditions training with YogaCampus.

Yoga for IBS

Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is usually diagnosed in the absence of any medically identified structural abnormalities in the digestive system. It is nevertheless an extremely distressing condition which affects sufferer’s lives to varying degrees depending on the severity.

IBS is thought to affect around 20% of the UK population, with patients reporting symptoms such as constipation and/or diarrhoea often accompanied by painful stomach cramps and bloating. Sufferers often find they are affected by non-gut complaints such as back pain, painful periods, anxiety and depression due to their illness.

Fortunately, there are quite a few things that can help alleviate symptoms or banish the IBS completely, ranging from modifying diet, clinical hypnosis, cognitive behavioural therapy and relaxation techniques. Yoga used therapeutically can really help to reduce the discomfort that IBS causes on both a physical and mental level. Gentle stretches can release tension in the body and breathing exercises can help reduce the anxiety that often accompanies IBS.

Yoga for Anxiety

Anxiety is defined as a mood disorder but also produces unpleasant physical effects. Anxiety can be labelled ‘General Anxiety’ where it is constant or ‘Episodic Anxiety’ where the anxiety is triggered by an event or cue such as a phobia.

Yoga can be very successful in reducing anxiety through a combination of yoga posture work (asanas) and breathwork. Meditation will also help to calm the mind.
